DJ Elevated and DJ Anarchy are collectively known as Soul Control. The two have been hosting a monthly, high energy dance party called ElectroBounce at the Shrine of The Black Madonna. The events showcase the two DJ’s style with House, Funk, Soul, Afro-Beat, Reggae, Dancehall and more. We speak with the two Gas God’s ambassadors about music and marijuana.
So, tell us a little about Soul Control.
DJ Anarchy
Well, Soul Control is, is a DJ duo, that has kind of infiltrated many different parts of the entertainment industry, but we’re mainly a DJ duo that specializes in eclectic movement-based activities. We’ve been doing it for around 6 years. We do a lot of dance parties, and we do a lot of healing in the Houston area right now. We’re trying to take it a little bit further but that’s for the future.
What would you say is the kind of vibe or the feeling you want fans to have when they come and they see you guys do any type of performance?
DJ Elevated
Well, I think that our intention is for people to come and feel like they're in a safe space. Someplace that allows them to really kind of free their mind and get lost in the music. Our genre selection is very fast, but it is also very intentional. We deal with a lot of high energy music from a range of genres. I want to use the word niche, because we don't necessarily focus on the popular or just radio friendly music. We focus on the energy.
How's the Houstonians response to what you guys are doing so far?
DJ Anarchy
It's been an amazing response. More people are coming and getting introduced to the sound. There's a lot of people that aren't from Houston that are in Houston now and they look for that eclectic type of sound. I'm from Virginia and when I moved down here, I brought some different tricks in the bag. I brought something that other DJs from here weren’t necessarily pursuing. Over the last six years, we've had to time cultivate our audience and make sure we put our word out to other people looking for these types of parties. and get the people there. It's been overwhelmingly good response all six years.
DJ Elevated
In that cultivation of our audience over the last few years you can see our intentions. If you look at all of our marketing materials its very vibrant. It's very artistic. Through the artwork we gather the type of people who would appreciate the type of music and the environment that we provide.
I see the colors and art on your flyers as well as the focus on health, and wellness overall. It appears to be a lifestyle that you two are presenting
DJ Anarchy
Definitely. We are focused on wellness, mentally and physically. That's what we're about.
How does how does Gas Gods fit into that whole lifestyle?
DJ Elevated
Well, I think that because of the kind of freeness that our community tends to adopt, just in their lifestyle practice marijuana and marijuana appreciation just as a part of the culture. It’s omnipresent. Gas God’s just fits and flows with a cultural norm that currently exists.
Y'all have been doing this for six years. You've seen attitudes towards marijuana change. You’ve seen people's ideas towards psychedelic drugs change. You’ve seen people's ideas towards food change. Five to 10 years ago, people might not have been on veganism here in the US. We've always had cultures practicing it, but now you see it more mainstream here. What is like seeing these changes occurring?
DJ Anarchy
Not to toot our own horn but in a way I feel like we kind of ushered in that change here in Houston. Before we met each other we were individually indulging in our particular pastimes. We've always championed it. We try to do things in you know smoke friendly spaces or outside to accommodate our people. The marijuana…the psychedelics…that’s the stuff we’ve been on so now that everybody else is catching up it just fits.
Now for people that are just getting exposed to you guys how do they connect so that can be a part of this energy?
DJ Elevated
You just have to come to electrobounce. We do that. That's a monthly offering that we give to the people on this currently housed at the shrine of the Black Madonna on MLK.
DJ Anarchy
We also have a fantastic voyage, which is another one of our flagship event that comes in two forms: a party and a bike ride held every first Saturday at Boondocks.
Now you two are some of Gas God’s brand ambassadors so what products are you always looking for?
DJ Anarchy
I’ve definitely come around to the pre rolls, pre rolls. It’s really about the convenience. At first I was kind of cautious because I like to roll in what I like to roll in. But if you’re on the move you just can’t beat the prerolls. Oh, and the gummies too. I wasn’t a fan of edibles because of the intensity of the high but I tried some and I was thoroughly pleased.
DJ Elevated
I would definitely say the gummies. After a long gig having a nice gummy and being able to relax and chill is perfect.
